What is Microdermabrasion?

Date: 10/02/2017

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive method of rejuvenation that helps to restore smooth younger looking skin. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to reduce the appearance of fine lines, scars, wrinkles, sun damaged and uneven skin tone. Regular treatments also have proven benefits to acne prone skin, whiteheads, blackheads, superficial age spots and hyperpigmentation and excessive oiliness or dry skin.

So, how does it work? Microdermabrasion exfoliates the dead skin, and this in turn stimulates collagen growth for smoother and healthier looking skin. As we age, the rate at which our skin regenerates slows, so removing the top layers speed up collagen production.

What is the procedure and is it painful?
The procedure is performed by using a hand-piece that a nurse passes over the skin to gently loosen and exfoliate dead skin cells. The underlying epidermis is stimulated by the abrasion and the vacuum, which promotes new collagen that thickens the dermis and provides resistance to the effects of ageing.

Even though Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and painless procedure, you may experience slight discomfort for a short time afterwards as the aluminium crystals are delivered at high velocity directly onto the skin’s surface. However, the controls of the hand-held device and vacuum capacity are flexible, so you can opt for a less intense treatment if that’s your preference. Once you have completed your Microdermabrasion treatment, it is not unusual to experience some redness in the first 48-hours. Some patients may experience slight shedding depending on their skin type, which is a natural side effect and nothing to be concerned about. It is recommended that patients do avoid heat treatments, such as sun beds, hot baths, saunas, and strenuous exercise for 24-hours after having their treatment. We would also advice that extra precaution is taken with day to day sun exposure following microdermabrasion treatment as the skin is more vulnerable to the sun's natural rays.

How is Microdermabrasion beneficial?
As you’ve already heard, Microdermabrasion is used to improve a whole host of different skin conditions or, more generally, to enhance skin to be at its best. The biggest benefit we hear, however, is to our patient’s confidence. We know all too well the effect poor skin (particularly on our faces) can have on confidence, and with so many products claiming to be the cure, where do you start? Our treatment offers you direct access to an experienced dermatologist and a technique that is proven to enhance your skin and your confidence too.

How often do you need to have the treatments?
Frequency will depend on your desired results as well as the nurse’s recommendations, however it is generally recommended that 6 treatments are conducted, each being once a month.
