Background Information
Miss Yvonne Luo is a highly regarded Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon with extensive expertise in managing complex eye conditions. Educated at the University of Cambridge, where she earned her medical degree, and later completing a PhD in Clinical Ophthalmology at University College London with a focus on retinal prosthesis research, Miss Luo combines academic excellence with advanced surgical training.
She undertook a prestigious vitreoretinal fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, further refining her surgical skills in managing retinal disease.
Currently, Miss Luo practices at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust and sees private patients at Spencer Private Hospitals in Ashford. She is the Vitreoretinal Service Lead for the trust. Her clinical expertise spans the treatment of retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreous haemorrhage, and symptomatic floaters. She is also skilled in managing medical retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion, alongside performing complex cataract surgery.
Renowned for her patient-centred approach, Miss Luo is consistently praised for her kindness, attentiveness, and technical skill, with many patients reporting restored or improved vision under her care. Alongside her clinical work, she contributes to ophthalmic research and education, cementing her reputation as a leader in her field.
Originally from Taiwan, Miss Luo is fully bilingual and is able to speak and write fluent Mandarin Chinese and English as natives and as such can offer consultation in both languages.
Miss Luo spent her secondary school years in Singapore before studying A-Levels at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London. She earned her primary medical degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, graduating with a MA in Pharmacology as well as MB, BChir degrees.
Having attended various schools in 3 very different cultural environment in her formative years has given Miss Luo a unique perspective in understanding patients from a wide variety of social economical and cultural background. This enables Miss Luo to communicate with patients effectively and form good rapport with them.
Miss Luo believes that a good work life balance and a cohesive working environment are the keys to continual high performance professionally. In her spare time, Miss Luo practices hot yoga and plays tennis regularly for exercise and relaxation. Miss Luo has recently started learning classical guitar in addition to playing the piano. Her favourite past time during the British summer include going to Wimbledon tennis championships and BBC proms. Miss Luo has travelled extensively both during holidays as well as for attending conferences, and enjoys skiing, hiking and SCUBA diving abroad.
