Background Information

Mr Arealis has been been working as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at East Kent University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2017, specialising in shoulder, elbow and upper limb surgery.

Previously, Mr Arealis worked as upper limb consultant in Shepton Mallet and Hereford after completing two upper limb fellowships.

In 2014, Mr Arealis completed the prestigious Reading Shoulder and Elbow Centre Fellowship and in 2015 the Shoulder and Knee Sports Fellowship at the large joints unit of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Mr Arealis is innovative and forward thinking and up to date with all the recent advances in his specialty. Mr Arealis has excellent rapports with his patients and is able and willing to listen to their concerns, formulating individualised treatment plans collaboratively.

As an upper limb Consultant, Mr Arealis provides a comprehensive upper limb service encompassing both elective and trauma, receiving referrals from all hospital sites of East Kent Hospital University Foundation. Mr Arealis has excellent results with very low rates of complications and excellent outcomes; maintaining the values of getting it right the first time throughout his practice. Mr Arealis' elective shoulder service has expanded to provide 3D planning and patient specific instrumentation, and he has an interest in complex instability surgery, including bone loss.

Mr Arealis has a strong research background and was awarded his PhD from the University of Thessaloniki and has since contributed to several postgraduate PhD and masters projects. Mr Arealis regularly lectures about shoulder and elbow surgery both nationally and on the international stage and is faculty of the Athens Shoulder and the Athens Elbow Course. Mr Arealis is actively involved in clinical research and has and has published multiple peer-reviewed journals and his work can be found on Google scholar, ORCID and ResearchGate.

Recently Mr Arealis has developed an interest in 3D bone printing and bioprinting after completing a course and publishing a review paper. Currently, he is Honorary Researcher, School Of Engineering and Digital Arts, University Of Kent, where he taught biomedical engineering students in 2022 and supervised student projects. From the same post Mr Arealis participated as Lead Medical Advisor for the Mechanised Orthosis for children with neurological disorders project, focusing on bionic rehabilitation technology for children with neurological disorders. As Visiting Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care, Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), in collaboration with the Stem Cell and Advanced Bio-Engineering Laboratory, Mr Arealis has led a collaborative research program aiming to develop biologic 3D bioprinted wound dressing. Since 2021, Mr Arealis has been leading Augmented and Virtual reality research project collaborations between CCCU, Health Education England and industry.

In the constantly evolving field of Medicine, Mr Arealis ensures that he maintains his professional development as a priority in his everyday practice but also ensuring that he ignites the spark of learning in his junior colleagues through teaching and supervision. Mr Arealis is very keen in teaching and has participated in congresses and attended relevant courses. Mr Arealis is a regular faculty of the Athens Shoulder Course, Athens Elbow Course, the Romanian Shoulder and Elbow annual meeting and the Medway orthopaedic registrar course.

Since 2020, Mr Arealis' academic career has expanded and he teaches orthopaedics in 3 medical schools: King’s College London, Kent and Medway Medical School and the European University of Cyprus.

Working with health and social care partners for the benefit of all patients is again important for Mr Arealis and he has a very good rapport with all staff and a firm belief in teamwork. In Mr Arealis' 360º Summary of Colleague Feedback for Appraisal and Revalidation he scored very high. Similarly Mr Arealis has excellent reviews from all the patients that he has treated.

On a personal level Mr Arealis enjoys long distance running and has completed 3 marathons. Finally, Mr Arealis enjoys sea sports and has completed a lot of sailing regattas including the Aegean Rally in Greece.
