Adenoidectomy

Adenoids are small glands at the back of the nose. Sometimes children have adenoids so big that they can block the nose, this can result in excessive snoring and obstructed breathing when sleeping.

The adenoids can cause ear problems by stopping the tube which joins your nose to your ear (the Eustachian tube), from working properly. This leads to difficulties hearing due to recurring ear infections or a build-up of fluid in the middle-ear, known as glue ear.

An Adenoidectomy will be performed under a general anaesthetic, which means your child will be asleep during the surgery. The adenoids are removed through the nose or through the mouth.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved. It is important that you understand the possible risks when deciding what to do next, these will be discussed at your clinic appointment if surgery is recommended by one of your specialist Consultants.

An Adenoidectomy is performed as a day case so your child will be able to go home once they have met discharge criteria.
