Male Breast Reduction Surgery (Gynaecomastia)

Male Breast Reduction

The stigma around male breast reduction has decreased over the past decade and the amount of men opting for this procedure is increasing with every year. At Spencer Private Hospitals we have lots of experience and have many consultants with the skill and expertise to perform male breast reductions effectively.

Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is a natural enlargement of male breast tissue. It is more common among males during puberty and will usually resolve by itself within two years.

For some men gynaecomastia will persist and affect them into adulthood. This can be down to a hormonal imbalance or even quick loss of weight causing loose skin and sagging. For those that suffer this it can negatively affect confidence and in some rarer cases it can even be painful and tender. A male breast reduction removes excess tissue and fat and is a quick solution to this problem.

The procedure

The procedure can be done in many ways but more regularly it is done in the following way:

  • Making a cut (incision) around the nipple
  • Using liposuction to suck out excess fatty tissue
  • Extending the cuts and re-positioning the nipples if there is a lot of tissue to remove

The exact details will be discussed with you during your consultation. The consultant will also answer any questions you may have and to help put your mind at ease.

Recovery

After the surgical procedure you can expect to have sore breasts for a few weeks and some visible scars (this may take several months to gradually fade).
