FAQ's

Treatments are varied ranging from simple lifestyle advice and modifications, to the use of medications or complex invasive procedures, including:

  • Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) for occlusive coronary artery disease
  • Permanent pacemakers
  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
  • Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT)
  • D/C cardioversion

A cardiologist is a medical doctor who specialises in the field of cardiovascular medicine. They will use a variety of methods to diagnose cardiovascular disease and implement appropriate treatments.

However, the prevention of cardiovascular disease is a vital role of the cardiologist. They can therefore advise on the appropriate preventative measure you need to take in order to maintain your cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular disorders can present with varied symptoms and physical signs that include:

  • Chest pain
  • Breathlessness & fatigue
  • Palpitations
  • Swollen ankles
  • Collapse (syncope)

Cardiovascular disorders are investigated using various non-invasive & invasive investigations. These include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Echocardiogram (ECHO)
  • 24hr Heart rhythm recording (Holter Monitor)
  • 24hr Blood pressure monitor
  • Exercise test (ETT)
  • CTCA (CT coronary angiogram)
  • Invasive coronary angiogram
  • Implantable heart rhythm monitor (Loop recorder)

Early symptoms may include chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations, fatigue, or swelling in the legs and ankles. If you're experiencing any of these, it’s important to get assessed promptly. Please note, that if any of these symptoms are acute (sudden and strong), you should immediately contact emergency services. Our Consultants are here for diagnostics and treatment, not emergency care.

Treatment varies depending on the diagnosis. Options may include:

  • Lifestyle advice on diet, exercise, and smoking cessation support

  • Medication to control blood pressure, heart rhythm, or cholesterol

  • Minimally invasive procedures, such as coronary angioplasty (PCI)

  • Device implantation, including:

    • Permanent pacemakers

    • Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)

    • Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT)

    • Implantable loop recorders for rhythm monitoring

  • Cardioversion to correct irregular heartbeats

Your Cardiologist will take a detailed medical history, assess your symptoms, and may recommend diagnostic tests. They’ll discuss your treatment options and guide you on managing or reducing your heart disease risk.

Yes, most private health insurers cover cardiology consultations and investigations. Please check with your provider or contact our patient services team for guidance.

You don’t necessarily need a GP referral to access private consultations with our Cardiologists, but many private health insurance providers will require a GP referral letter in order to approve payments for consultation and treatments.

Many diagnostic tests, such as ECGs and blood tests, provide results the same day or within a few days. For more complex imaging (e.g. CT scans), results may take slightly longer. We strive to keep you informed at every step.
